Accessibility
Dollar Matters is committed to making financial education accessible to everyone.
Our Commitment
Dollar Matters believes that financial literacy is a right, not a privilege, and that includes making sure our digital content is accessible to people of all abilities. We are committed to ensuring our website meets or exceeds the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard.
Accessibility Features
Our website is designed and built with accessibility in mind. Current features include:
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements (buttons, links, forms) can be accessed and operated using a keyboard alone.
- Screen reader support: We use semantic HTML, proper heading hierarchy, and ARIA labels to ensure compatibility with screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver.
- Alternative text: All meaningful images include descriptive alt text so screen reader users understand their content.
- Color contrast: Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratio requirements to ensure readability for users with low vision or color blindness.
- Scalable text: Our layout responds to browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
- Plain language: Financial content is written in clear, plain language to be understandable by a wide range of readers, including those with cognitive disabilities or limited English proficiency.
- Focus indicators: Visible focus indicators help keyboard users track where they are on the page.
- Responsive design: The site works across devices and screen sizes, including mobile assistive technology.
Known Limitations
We are an all-volunteer student organization and are continuously working to improve accessibility. Some areas we are actively improving include:
- Ensuring all interactive calculators have fully descriptive form labels and live region announcements for screen readers
- Reviewing all third-party embedded content for accessibility compliance
- Adding captions to any future video content
Browser and Assistive Technology Support
Dollar Matters aims to support the most recent two versions of major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and commonly used assistive technologies including:
- NVDA + Chrome (Windows)
- JAWS + Chrome or Firefox (Windows)
- VoiceOver + Safari (macOS and iOS)
- TalkBack + Chrome (Android)
